Press Release
December 17, 2021 — January 29, 2022
This exhibition is a collection of Barrickman’s recent painting mixing landscape, figure and still life via a series of imagined scenes.
Narrative as a construct may only be useful here as a basis from which the paintings can digress. As in life, here a winter figure out for a stroll may take in the sights of the concrete world while unintentionally interspersing them with memory, plans and semiconscious fantasy.
Through an acceptance of style that ranges from awkward to refined, these paintings lead us to meditate on the mundane, fearful or fantastic digressions that are the default mode of our human mind.
The audience is invited to occupy these works as spaces reserved for their own readings, associations and feeling. These works suggest an awareness and contemplation of our own layered episodes and how they may resonate with and against one another as a whole, lived experience.
